A touch-up can look factory neat or draw attention from across the car park. The difference is usually not the paint colour - it is the work done before the paint goes on. This car paint preparation guide covers the process that gives colour-matched touch-up paint, aerosols and larger refinishing kits the clean surface they need to bond and level properly.
Preparation changes with the damage. A stone chip on a bonnet needs a different approach to peeling clear coat on a roof, kerb rash on an alloy wheel or bare steel exposed by a deep scratch. Do not reach for paint until you know whether you are repairing clear coat, colour, primer, plastic or rust.
Car Paint Preparation Guide: Start With the Repair Size
First inspect the damaged area in good light. Wash the panel, dry it, then look at it from different angles. If the mark catches a fingernail but has not gone through the colour coat, it may be a scratch that can be polished or lightly sanded before refinishing. If you can see grey primer, black plastic, bare metal or rust, the repair needs more preparation and usually primer.
For a small chip, keep the repair local. Clean the chip, remove any loose edge and build colour in controlled coats. For a larger scratch or aerosol repair, the surrounding paint needs to be feathered so there is no hard step between the original finish and the repair. Painting over a sharp chipped edge almost always leaves a visible outline after clear coat.
Check the manufacturer paint code before ordering colour. A vehicle badge, registration details or the colour name alone are not enough for accurate matching. The paint code identifies the factory formula, while the vehicle’s existing paint may still vary slightly due to age, sun exposure and previous repairs. Using the correct code gives you the best starting point; good preparation and sensible blend area selection help the final repair disappear.
Wash, Decontaminate and Degrease Properly
Paint will not stick reliably to wax, silicone, tyre shine, road film, polishing residue or fingerprints. A quick wipe with a household cleaner is not preparation. Start by washing the panel with clean water and automotive shampoo, then dry it with a clean microfibre cloth. Pay attention to panel gaps, door handles, badges, wheel arches and mouldings where dirt can blow back onto fresh paint.
Next, use a suitable wax and grease remover on the repair area and the immediate surrounding panel. Apply it with one clean cloth and wipe it off with another before it dries. This lift-and-remove method matters. Smearing the same cloth around simply redistributes contamination.
Avoid household detergents, methylated spirits, petrol and harsh solvents. They can leave residue, soften plastic trim or react badly with certain finishes. Once the area is degreased, do not touch it with bare hands. Skin oils are enough to cause fish-eyes or poor adhesion in a small repair.
Sand for Adhesion, Not Just for Appearance
Sanding creates a keyed surface so primer, base coat or clear coat can mechanically bond. The right grit depends on what you are sanding and what product comes next. Coarse paper removes damage quickly, but deep scratches can remain visible through the paint system. Fine paper leaves a smoother surface, but can be too gentle for a damaged edge or bare metal.
For most small repairs, begin with the least aggressive grit that will remove the defect. Sand loose paint, lifting clear coat and corrosion until you reach solid material. Feather the edge out gradually rather than creating a small, steep crater. Use a sanding block on flat sections where possible; fingertips tend to create grooves and uneven low spots.
A practical approach is to shape damage with around P320 to P400 when required, refine the repair with P600, then use P800 to P1000 for areas receiving base coat. Existing clear coat being prepared for a clear blend is commonly scuffed with a fine abrasive such as P1000 to P1500, depending on the product instructions. Always follow the grit range specified for the primer, base coat or clear coat you are using.
Wet sanding can reduce dust and give a controlled finish, but it adds moisture. Keep water away from exposed steel, filler edges and panel seams, then allow the area to dry completely. Dry sanding is often the safer option for chips and small rust repairs because it makes it easier to see exactly what is happening.
After sanding, blow or wipe away dust, clean again with wax and grease remover, and inspect the surface. Any glossy patch left within the paint area may not have enough key. Any flaky edge, pinhole, rust stain or sanding scratch should be dealt with now, not hidden under colour.
Treat Bare Metal, Plastic and Rust Differently
Bare steel needs prompt protection. Surface rust must be sanded back to clean metal, not merely coloured over. If corrosion has pitted the steel, remove as much affected material as practical, treat it with the correct rust treatment where appropriate, and use a suitable primer system. Paint applied over active rust will fail from underneath.
If the damage is deeper than paint, use automotive finishing putty or body filler only after the surface is clean and properly prepared. Shape it carefully, then prime it. Filler is not a substitute for a thick coat of primer, and primer is not a substitute for levelling a dent.
Plastic bumpers, mirror housings and trim may need a plastic adhesion promoter before primer or colour, particularly where bare plastic is exposed. Flexible parts also need compatible products. Wheel repairs have their own requirements because brake dust, heat and kerb damage are hard on coatings. Clean alloy thoroughly and use products designed for wheel refinishing rather than treating it like a normal painted guard.
Prime Only Where It Is Needed
Primer builds a stable foundation over bare metal, filler, repaired plastic and breakthrough areas. It improves adhesion and helps hide minor sanding marks, but it should not be sprayed across sound factory paint without a reason. Unnecessary primer creates more edges to sand and more opportunity for texture differences.
Apply light, even coats according to the product directions. Heavy primer coats can sag, trap solvent or take far longer to dry than expected. Once cured, sand the primer smooth with the recommended fine grit and feather its outer edge into the surrounding paint. If you sand through primer back to metal or filler, re-prime that spot rather than hoping base coat will cover it.
Aerosol primer is suitable for many smaller DIY repairs. For larger panels or repairs where durability matters, a properly matched primer and paint system offers more control. Product compatibility matters: use primers, base coats, clears, thinners and activators that are intended to work together.
Mask the Panel Like You Mean It
Masking protects adjacent panels, glass, lights, rubber and trim from overspray. It also controls where the repair finishes. Use automotive masking tape and masking paper or plastic, not newspaper. Newspaper can bleed through, shed fibres and leave a rough edge.
Do not tape a tight square around the damage and spray straight up to the line unless you are repairing a small isolated section that will be polished later. On a visible panel, place masking boundaries well away from the repair where possible, use panel gaps and body lines to your advantage, and plan for a controlled blend. Back-masking can soften an edge around openings, but it needs careful placement to avoid overspray creeping underneath.
Before spraying, make sure the workspace is clean, dry and sheltered from wind. Sweep or wet down the floor to limit dust, but do not create humidity or allow water near the repair. Good lighting is essential. You need to see coverage, metallic orientation and wetness as you spray, not discover missed patches after the clear coat has cured.
Final Checks Before Colour and Clear
Your final pre-paint check should be methodical. The surface should be dry, dull where it has been scuffed, clean to the touch without being handled, and free of sanding dust. Shake aerosols thoroughly, test the spray pattern on masking paper and follow the flash times between coats. Rushing flash time is a common cause of solvent issues, dullness and poor finish quality.
Base coat is applied for colour coverage, usually in several light-to-medium coats. Clear coat provides gloss and protection where the paint system requires it. For a small chip, a touch-up pen or brush bottle allows precision. For a scratch across a door or a repaired bumper corner, an aerosol or base coat and clear coat kit gives better coverage and control.
2K activated aerosols can deliver a tougher, more professional-style clear finish, but they contain hazardous materials and demand the right respiratory protection, gloves, ventilation and strict adherence to the safety directions. Do not treat 2K products as ordinary spray paint. If you cannot set up a safe spraying environment, choose an appropriate alternative or have the job completed professionally.
